The Children's Justice Center & The Children's Alliance
The Children’s Justice Center (CJC)
The CJC of Oahu was created as a fair, neutral and child friendly site to interview children regarding allegations of sexual abuse. The Honolulu Rotary raised the funds to do the renovations for the Center. The Friends of the CJC (aka The Children’s Alliance of Hawaii) was created as a non-profit (501c3) partner for the CJC. This public /private partnership was replicated as four neighbor CJCs were subsequently opened, East and West Hi., Maui and Kauai. The CJCs of Hawaii are fully accredited members of the National Children's Alliance.
The number of new child sex abuse/assault reports to law enforcement and Child Welfare (Child Protective Services) on Oahu ranges between 600 to over 1,200 depending on the year. The number of children interviewed at the CJC of Oahu thus also ranges, depending on the new reports. The CJCs revised its statute in 2001, adding the forensic interviews of children who have been seriously physically abused and children who are witnesses to crimes.
The CJC partners with state, city, federal and private agencies in the investigation of these cases in the civil and criminal systems. Any law enforcement agency can use the CJC, including the Honolulu Police Dept., Military, the FBI and the Department of Human Services (Child Welfare Services).
