Real Life Stories

Anna
Anna, a quiet 9-year-old who rarely smiled, was referred to CAH by the State Dept. of Human Services Child Welfare Services Division. Anna had been sexually abused by her stepfather from age 4 to age 8. After each episode of abuse, Anna’s stepfather would remind her that she and her immigrant mother would be deported if she ever told anyone. However, Anna’s mother knew something was wrong, even before Anna finally told her what was happening.

What We Do
Each year, The Children’s Alliance of Hawai‘i (CAH) serves hundreds of sexually abused children from infants to 18 years of age and their families on O‘ahu and Kaua‘i through the following programs and services:

Enhancements, a program that provides financial assistance for sexually abused children and their siblings.

HEART (Healing Emotions with Art & Recreation Together) therapeutic activities, done in small, gender-specific groups, for sexually abused children, ages 9-18.

Ho‘omaka, an individualized team mentoring program that assists sexually abused youth who are struggling with life circumstances, direction and other issues related to their abuse.

Strengthening Parents, a program that provides support and resources for parents of sexually abused children.

Special Projects that provide needed items to sexually abused children and their siblings.

Our Living and Thriving model of providing services is based on a holistic, evidence-based, long-term approach to working with sexually abused children and their families. Most of CAH’s clients receive clinical, therapeutic services through state-contracted and private primary providers in the community. CAH provides ongoing activities and resources to enhance the healing process of each child through unique strategies that support their primary clinical therapy. Our overall goal is to increase their self-esteem and self-confidence and help them build the skills, knowledge and resources to achieve their goals for the future. We strive to serve the victims of child sexual abuse, advocate for their needs of safety and welfare, and proactively work within our community to diminish, if not eradicate, child sexual assault.

Who We Serve
While victims of child sex abuse come from all walks of life, socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities and communities throughout the state of Hawai‘i, CAH typically sees clients who:

• are in or have completed clinical sex abuse treatment.

• are new to the social services, criminal justice and law enforcement systems and are unaware of the availability of specialized therapeutic treatment services, don’t know how to access other services, and/or choose not to avail themselves of one-on-one, group or family sexual abuse treatment.

• are receiving primary services elsewhere and wish to enhance those services through the programs of CAH.

• have household incomes that qualify the children for free or reduced school lunch.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of sexual abuse, CAH can help. Call (808) 599-2955 or (808) 246-3736 on Kaua‘i for more information.
